Skylight and Roofing Windows In The West Midlands

What are skylight windows?

There are ways to open up a space by utilising a part of the home that is overlooked, the roof. Natural light is an effective way to illuminate an attic space or any home with high ceilings. Skylight windows are designed to admit sunlight and do not open. The pane can be glass or plastic and either transparent or translucent for more privacy. Some skylight roof installation has some form of ventilation to allow fresh air to enter the room. The addition of the skylight can also add value to your property. The term skylight refers to an assortment of roof windows including commercial applications. This includes flat roof skylights and flat roof windows.

What are the characteristics of roof windows?

With very similar functionality to skylight windows, roof windows open up a space with natural light and allow fresh air to circulate. The main difference between a skylight ceiling and fixed roof windows is that the roof window can be opened. It essentially acts like most other windows in the home. Roof windows are also usually double glazed so they are great for insulation.

What kind of windows would be suitable for you?

Centre-Pivot Windows

The centre-pivot window has its hinges set in the middle of the frame. When they are opened, they rotate the top inwards and the bottom outwards. The handles of this roof window are placed at the top for this reason and this allows for furniture to be placed underneath with little intrusion. The best use for centre-pivot windows is for a lower sitting window which gives easier access. This also creates two openings so air flows more effectively.

Top-Hung Windows

Similar to the centre-pivot windows, the top-hung windows are hinged at the top and open outwards; the handle is positioned at the bottom. These work great attics used for storage as they are accessible, providing there is no furniture in the way, and flood the room with light.

Balcony Windows

Probably the most ingenious fixed roof window available, these roof windows are top-hung and have a pop out Juliet balcony. This allows you can look out at the view from your home without requiring planning permission to install. These work especially well in bedrooms with a pitched roof.

Flat Roof Windows

These can be either a fixed shut skylight ceiling window or openable fixed roof windows. They are the perfect choice for installing windows in hard-to-reach areas and a great source of natural light.

What rooms would benefit from skylight and roof windows?

Studio apartment

Do you own your own top floor flat? If you have a pitched roof then that space could be at a premium. Roof windows are great to introduce a more evenly distributed light source and not interfere with the wall space you have. Kitchenettes benefit the most from natural light for cooking and hosting.

Spare bedroom

The loft is predominantly used as a place to store things out of sight and out of mind. If you have a large loft space and a growing family, it would be cost effective to add an extra bedroom. As the roof is usually pitched on UK houses, fixed roof windows would offer the best solution for both ventilation and light. With a centre-pivot window, you can still have your bed or a sofa under the window without compromising the rest of the room.

Accessible Storage

The most common use for a loft is to put anything you use rarely, or not at all, up out of sight. The loft space can become hazardous and difficult to navigate as they are both filled with stuff and very dark. Keeping the loft in order and lit makes it much easier to find possessions when you need them.
