Why is a wood door popular in the home?

Wooden doors can be used as different types of entrances, such as security doors, internal doors, and even revolving doors in retail properties. External wooden doors need to be made from solid hardwood for better security, whereas internal wooden doors can be made from lighter, softer wood, depending on your preferences.

Wooden front doors have always been a staple for home owners. Solid oak doors, or ones reenforced with a solid core, offer protection without compromising on style. External wooden doors can comprise of a wooden door and window to let light in, and you can see who is at your door.

Internal doors

Internal wooden doors can come in almost any form or design, as wood is an easy material to work with. They can be lighter, and don’t need to be solid wood. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have solid oak interior doors, as they add more than just a door, they add to the overall design of your home.

Different compositions of wood doors

Solid wood

Depending on what style you are going for, solid wood doors are either made from a single slab of wood or out of wooden panels. The entire composition of the door is made from natural wood, no matter what wood is used. For exterior wood doors, you will need a resilient solid wood door as it has to withstand year-round weather.

Solid Core

Similar to solid wood, the solid core door is made with a manufactured wooden core that is known as engineered board. This can also be referred to as MDF or particle board. The core is strong and the outer shell is made by gluing a veneer over the solid core to imitate the appearance a of solid wood door. They can be heavier and a little cumbersome regarding wooden door installation, but they considerably cheaper.

Hollow Core

For a more lightweight wood door, the Hollow Core door is made from fibreboard and then laminated to look like wood. These are perfect for use as interior wood doors as they are easy to install, and require less effort to open.

What types of wood are most popular for doors?

Oak

A very popular choice for doors both internal and external, oak is a strong hardwood that can last a very long time. Solid oak internal doors are great for many uses, one being front doors for multiple occupancy buildings, such as flats.

Pine

Most commonly used best for internal wooden doors, pine is a softwood that is used in all manners of carpentry. Pine is light and easy to work with, and is used widely in door and window frames. Due to pine not having natural resistance to decay or insects, it is most commonly used untreated for inside the home.
